If you’re losing weight on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or another GLP-1 medication, then you may have read that muscle atrophy is a common side effect. I help folks in the Capital Region preserve muscle mass while on GLP-1 medication, so the weight you lose is fat, and the strength you keep is yours.

MAINTAIN MUSCLE MASS DURING GLP-1 TREATMENT

How Do I Avoid Losing Muscle on Ozempic or Other GLP-1 Medications?

To avoid losing muscle mass while using GLP-1 medications, you need to do three things consistently: eat enough protein, lift weights 2 to 4 times per week, and lose weight at a controlled pace. GLP-1 medication changes your appetite, but it doesn’t change how muscle works. In a calorie deficit, your body sheds whatever it isn’t using, and muscle is one of the first things to go.  I offer GLP-1 Muscle Preservation which includes both strength training and nutritional coaching.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Why GLP-1 Weight Loss Takes Muscle With It

Losing muscle isn’t a side effect of doing something wrong. It’s what rapid weight loss does by default. Research on GLP-1 weight loss has measured lean mass losses approaching 40 percent of total weight lost in some patients. Here are four reasons why are bodies resopnd this way during GLP-1 treatment:

A Large Calorie Deficit

GLP-1s make a big deficit almost effortless to reach. Your body funds that deficit from fat and muscle both unless something gives it a reason not to.

Appetite Suppression

When hunger disappears, meals shrink or get skipped entirely. The first casualty is almost always protein.

Protein Intake Drops

Muscle is built from protein and kept with protein. Under-eat it for months and your body breaks down muscle to cover the gap.

No Training Signal

Without resistance training, your body has no reason to hold onto muscle it isn't using while the scale drops.

HOW WE FIX IT

How My GLP-1 Muscle Preservation Training Works

My three step process for maintaining muscle during GLP-1 Treatment includes:

1

STRENGTH TRAINING

We lift 2 to 4 times per week with progressive resistance.

2

NUTRITION COACHING

I coach protein-first eating that works with a suppressed appetite instead of fighting it

3

TRACKING YOUR PROGRESS

We’ll track your weight each week, and as the scale drops and your lifts hold, that’s the proof the weight coming off is the weight you wanted gone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Muscle Loss During GLP-1 Treatment

Which GLP-1 medications does this apply to?

The training approach is the same across all of them, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. If you're losing weight quickly with a suppressed appetite, the muscle risk is the same and so is the answer: protein, progressive resistance training, and a controlled rate of loss. The brand name doesn't change the program.

Do I need my doctor's approval to start training?

Talk to your prescriber before we start, yes. I coach alongside your medical care, never in place of it, and I work within whatever guidance your doctor gives. My lane is training and nutrition habits. Medical decisions stay between you and your prescriber, exactly where they belong.

Can I start if I've never lifted weights?

Yes. This program doesn't assume a lifting background. We start with an assessment, learn the movements at your pace, and build from where you actually are. Protecting muscle doesn't require advanced training. It requires consistent, progressive training, and that's coachable from day one.

What if I can barely eat on my medication?

That's one of the most common things I hear, and it's exactly why this program exists. We work with the appetite you have, not the one you used to have: protein first at every meal, smaller and denser portions, and a realistic daily target. And if eating becomes a genuine struggle, that's a conversation for your doctor, and I'll tell you so.

What happens when I stop the medication?

That's a medical decision for you and your prescriber, but here's what the training side means for it: the muscle you kept is what makes your result durable. Clients who protect their strength through the loss come off the other side with structure, capability, and habits already in place. That is the entire point of doing this work now instead of after.
